Wolves hopes fast fading
A softly struck goal after 76 minutes by Vincent Minors enabled Wolves to salvage a point at Lord's yesterday -- but it did little to help their Premier Division title chase.
In fact, the result wasn't much help to either side as Boulevard desperately needed maximum points in their bid to avoid relegation.
Minors' strike came at a time when Wolves' hopes looked to have vanished, having had hard-working forward Nakia Smith sent off for a serious foul after 73 minutes by referee Richard Knight.
The manner in which the goal came annoyed Boulevard, whose defence were caught sleeping.
A seemingly harmless ball was allowed to bounce over the defence but the alert Minors took notice and slipped behind two players to beat advancing goalkeeper Kimwandar Walker before gratefully firing home.
Earlier Boulevard had done well to battle back after allowing Wolves to take the upperhand for most of the first half.
Denied a goal after 13 minutes when Minors set up Nakia Smith whose close-range shot was smartly blocked by the advancing Walker, Wolves took a deserved 1-0 lead after 20 minutes when Jared Peniston hit home from 14 yards after combining down the left flank with the ambitious Mark Ray.
Boulevard slowly found their rhythm and levelled the score after 36 minutes when Shakia Crockwell netted after receiving a cross from the left.
Boulevard finished the half strongly and were unlucky not to go ahead when Crockwell's blast from 15 yards was palmed against the bar by goalkeeper Hewvonne Brown and then cleared.
However, Wolves were to re-establish their superiority during the first 15 minutes of the second half and had two close calls.
After 57 minutes Peniston headed a corner by Anthony Thomas a foot over goal from 10 yards, then Minors followed up by brilliantly dribbling by three defenders only to have Walker advance to smother his shot from close range.
Boulevard soon found their touch and Stevie Wade was able to sneak through the defence during a counter attack and whip a shot home from 12 yards after 65 minutes to put them ahead 2-1.
Play deteriorated after this with neither team accomplishing much up front and Wolves were really in a quandary when reduced to 10 players following the ejection of the tireless Smith.
But then Minors came up with the goal that denied Boulevard maximum points.
