Wright's misery continues

Sara Lane Wright's Olympic misery continued yesterday despite a slight improvement in races three and four of the Europe Dinghy regatta.

Two 22nd place finishes lifted the Bermudian from 26th to 25th overall in the 27-boat fleet, but in light six to eight knot winds in Sydney Harbour it was generally another frustrating day.

After enduring a 26th and 25th on the opening day, Bermuda's 1999 Pan-Am silver medallist is already out of medal contention as only two of her 11-race results can be discarded. Wright had said all along that she considered Sydney a learning experience, a stepping stone to Athens in 2004 where she hopes to challenge.

But the 31-year-old had certainly harboured high hopes of a place in the top half of the fleet following an encouraging year of racing and training.

Yesterday was almost a repeat of Wednesday's disappointment as back-to-back bad starts foiled any hopes of a high finish.

In race three, Wright rounded the first mark in 20th place and had dropped to 22nd by the next. At one point she slipped to 24th but pulled back to finish 22nd, two minutes and 14 seconds behind winner Shirley Robertson of Great Britain, who followed with a sixth place in race four and remains the overall fleet leader with just 14 points.

Wright has now accumulated 95.

In the afternoon's second race, Wright again struggled off the start, taking the first mark in 23rd place and never getting any higher than 21st.

She returns to the Harbour tomorrow for races five and six.
