Young rugby players win accolades
The Bermuda Rugby Football Union’s youth development programme came to a successful conclusion with a well attended award ceremony held at Saltus School after the final youth rugby training day of this season.
The BRFU has decided to award promising players of different age groups a monetary gift toward school supplies. The awards are named in memory of Bermuda and Police rugby stalwart Alan Oliver who tragically died in a recent traffic accident. Alan’s widow Crystal Aming was present to hand out the Alan Oliver Memorial / Mini Rugby Player of the Year awards to: Age 7s — Logan Ball, Age 8 to 10 — Cameron Turnbull, Age 11 and over — Antonio Perinchief-Leader.
The BRFU will make this an annual ceremony to further Youth Development Rugby and will accept donations on behalf of Alan Oliver. Long-term sponsorship is also being sought.
Local youth rugby is growing and the Bermuda’s Under-18 team has played two Toronto High School touring sides in as many weekends.
Bermuda beat a visiting Humberside High School last weekend in a 7s competition and a 10s game before playing their first 15-a-side game this weekend against a much more experienced Don Mills High School. The Canadian side taught the local boys a lesson in rugby running out 10 tries to nil victors. Stand-out players for Bermuda were Luben Sousa and Norman Bryan.
