Young Sean take his chance

The Somerset Trojans leaped right back to the the top of the First Division yesterday when they came from behind at the Somerset Cricket Club to snatch a one-goal win from fellow title-chasers Boulevard Blazers.

The loss broke the Blazers' unbeaten league run of seven games and dropped them to fourth in the standings as the season begins to wind down.

The winning goal came only minutes into the second half when young Sean Simmons was on hand to knock the ball home from close after a free kick from Jerry Webb had eluded goalkeeper Mitchell Steede.

Until that point, though, the Trojans were made to look second best as they were forced to chase the Blazers, whose fast-paced passing game opened glaring holes in their defence throughout the first half.

Boulevard caught the Trojans off guard right from the opening whistle as they ran right at their opponents and ended the move with Neil Robinson blasting his quickly taken shot just wide of the upright.

Their left wing dynamo, Dwight Warren, was next to really test the mettle of the Trojans' goalkeeper Winslow Williams when he unleashed a vicious shot from the edge of penalty area that the 'keeper beautifully pushed around the post for a corner.

After 20 minutes, Boulevard finally opened the scoring with a play that was once again initiated by Warren. He finished his penetrating run down the left wing with a perfect cross through the heart of the goalmouth.

Somehow, the ball eluded the Somerset defence and ran right into the path of Johnny Boyles who rammed it home from near the penalty spot.

This early setback noticeably put more urgency into the Trojans' play and they too began to put together passes, which were not featured earlier.

Webb, Simmons and Kwame Tucker combined effectively with fine running off the ball that showed weaknesses in the Boulevard defence and threatened to even the score.

One such combination on the right side ended with Randy Simmons well placed to score but he had his shot blocked at the crucial moment by Wayne Richardson.

Within 10 minutes of Boulevard's success, the Trojans too found the net! Tucker ran on to a penetrating pass from Webb and, with a clear run at the Boulevard goal, he was pulled down in the penalty area by Richardson.

Referee Keith Smith had no hesitation in awarding the penalty and Randy Simmons made no mistake as he easily scored past Steede.

The Blazers still were very much in the game and had threatening shots by Warren and Kenny Hill go just wide of the target in the dying minutes of the first half.

In the opening minutes of the second half Hill was adventurous with an overhead attempt that he completely missed near the Trojans' six-yard line.

This however was to be the Blazers' last real chance at goal for a while as the rest of the half belonged to the Trojans.

Only seconds after Hill's miss Sean Simmons netted what was to be the winner at the other end of the field. His goal was a superbly-taken opportunistic effort that saw him knock in the goal after a flying Anthony Burchall had headed on Webb's free kick.

With the lead in hand, the Trojans went in search of more goals to consolidate it. Tucker finished off a fine build-up with Randy Simmons by unleashing a vicious shot that just skimmed over the Boulevard crossbar with the 'keeper scrambling to cover.

Tucker was denied again not long afterwards when his quickly taken snap shot from just inside the visitors' penalty area was snatched off the goal-line by the sprawling 'keeper.

The Blazers had one last chance at finding the equaliser late in the match but Warren's weak shot from close, though beating Williams, rebounded off the upright and was cleared hastily by Larry Simmons.
