Youngsters invited to Tufts athletics camp

athletics camp at Tufts University, Massachusetts this summer under the expert instruction of Bermudian coach Branwen Smith-King.

Smith-King, the assistant athletic director and head coach of the women's cross-country and track and field teams, has promised a "great experience'' for all those who choose to attend the Jumbo Track and Field/Activities Camp.

"The camp will offer athletes of all levels and abilities the opportunity to participate in a fun-filled environment,'' assured Smith-King, who received the first CARIFTA Games gold medal ever awarded back in 1972 after placing first in the shot put.

The camp is open to all boys and girls between the third and 12th grades and will take place from July 10-14 at the Dussault Track on the Medford Campus.

Already, one local running club, Dragons, has committed to sending a group of youths to the camp, with Smith-King arranging for their accommodation for the period.

To be emphasised during the track and field segment of the camp will be the various technical and training aspects of the sport, with each athlete being allowed the chance to learn new events as well as perfecting skills in their specialty.

Also, in conjunction with the camp it is hoped that sport enhancing skills, such as relaxation, conditioning and nutrition, team games, and mental preparation can also be provided to give the children an opportunity to learn about other disciplines needed to become a better athlete.

The afternoon portion of the camp will focus on activities and games that are designed to build self-esteem and fitness levels.

Parents can choose to send children to either morning, afternoon or full-day sessions, with the half days costing $100 for the five days, and the full-day $150. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.

Smith-King, who is the sister of Bermuda Secondary Schools Federation administrator Clint Smith, will be assisted by a staff containing several other Tufts University coaches along with student-athletes.
