Youth opener spells gloom for Bermuda

Bermuda's opening game in the CONCACAF Youth Tournament proved to be a mismatch as a well-drilled United States team came away with a deserved triumph at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna, British Columbia, yesterday.

Ricky Tucker had a superb game in goal for the young Bermudians and was chiefly responsible for keeping the US at bay for nearly a half-hour.

But once Imad Baba opened the scoring after 27 minutes, there was a spell were four goals were conceded in 38 minutes.

Nelson Vargas gave the US a 2-0 lead at the half with a 37th-minute strike and the Americans netted their third right after the break, courtesy of a Greg Berhalter penalty. Brian Kelly, in the 65th, and Hamisi Amani-Dove, 10 minutes from time, completed the rout.

The closest Bermuda came to scoring was when Quincey Aberdeen shot over midway through the second half.

Bermuda: Ricky Tucker; Jamel Samuels, Kimandi Binns, Shawn Riley (Eugene Dean, 45 mins), Dano Outerbridge, Keishon Smith; Otis Steede (Jamal Smith, 60 mins), Steven Arorash; Quincey Aberdeen, Khari Sharrieff, Stanton Lewis.
