Zebras aiming to clinch league crown
League leaders PHC Zebras will be looking to bag the first jewel in the coveted triple crown tomorrow at Bernard Park.
Zebras have all but placed their ribbons on the Premier Division trophy and can do so tomorrow by taking at least a point off their nearest rivals North Village Rams when the two clubs go head-to-head for the fifth time this season.
Very little has separated Zebras and Rams - who will also collide in next month's Friendship Trophy final - this season with Kyle Lightbourne's men edging past their city rivals 1-0 in the FA Cup last month in the last meeting between the two sides.
Lightbourne said he expects tomorrow's encounter to be just as close but is confident his team can achieve their objectives.
He said: "I think it's going to be another close game between two evenly matched teams. Overall this season I think we have been among the most consistent teams in the league and so on paper it should be a very interesting match."
Zebras presently have a six-point cushion and a superior goal difference of plus 11 over second-placed Rams who held Lightbourne's men to a 1-1 stalemate at Southampton Oval in the first league meeting between the two sides earlier in the season.
There's no doubt PHC can expect to find their work cut out for them tomorrow against Village - who have yet to be beaten at home this season - although Lightbourne believes the pressure will be on the home team to keep their slim championship hopes alive.
"Obviously we would love to come away with maximum points but mathematically we only need a draw to win the championship," he said. "Therefore the onus is really on Village to win the game - there's more pressure on them than on us.
"But we are confident we can achieve our objective of winning the league. Our plan is to play our normal style of football that has brought us success to this point from the outset."
In terms of the race for the league championship, Rams coach Elliott Jennings reckons it's not over until the proverbial 'fat lady sing's and as such has urged his players to rise to the challenge and go all out for the win.
"It's not over yet and at the end of the day we need to win at all costs," he said.
"But obviously at this stage of the season we would prefer to have been in first place.
"PHC have had a great season and everything seems to be going in their favour at the moment. But we are not going to lay down and just give them the title and so it should be a very interesting match."
Another crucial league match tomorrow will unravel at Police Field where Somerset Trojans are fighting off the ropes to avoid making the dreaded drop into the First Division.
A Trojans win will keep their survival hopes alive for another week but anything less will condemn them to 12.30 football next season.
Elsewhere, Dandy Town and Devonshire Cougars will be playing for pride at St.John's Field while at Malabar, Boulevard should hammer the final nail in Ireland Rangers' relegation coffin.
Meanwhile the First Division promotion race should continue to heat up this weekend.
Leaders St.David's Warriors host second-placed Southampton Rangers in the First Division match of the day at Lords while third-placed Hamilton Parish are away to eighth-placed Social Club at Bernard Park.
Sixth-placed X Roads should easily get past cellar dwellars Paget Lions at Garrison Field, fourth-placed Somerset Eagles have a bye this weekend while fifth -placed Wolves beat pointless BAA 3-1 earlier this week.
