A crowd of more than 200 turned out for the second harness racing meet of the season at Vesey Street on Sunday, and were treated to plenty of excitement
One of the best events of the day saw Pat's Recovery, driven by Randy Wilkinson, nose out Diamondway with Tony Adcock, by just one fifth of a second.
Just a Gigolo, driven by Michael Roberts, then beat Diamondway by exactly the same margin five races later.
Todd's Ebony (Samantha Hayward) made his first start of the season on a winning note with victory in event 11 in a fast 1:12.2 while Miss Tuffer Road, owned and driven by Leslie Wolffe, returned to the races by winning both heats.
Other double winners were Eddie Roques's two-year-old Tuxedo Bowtie, Michael Roberts' Direct Toy Boy and Championne Country, driven by David Lopes, who has now advanced to the next time bar.
Johnny Five and Grand Willy also won two heats including the day's feature race in an overall time of 1:18.0.
Eddie the Great with Dal Vasconcelos and Murray Terceira's Carolina Jubilee shared the honours in the Free For All with Michael DeCosta's Grand Shady finishing second both times.
Racing is on tap again this Sunday, starting at 1.00 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY CC Another cross country season gets underway this Saturday with the first races in both the junior and senior series taking place at Chaplin Bay.
Other races will be held at Astwood Park, Spittal Pond, PHC Club and Ferry Reach before the series concludes with the National Championships on December 14 at a venue to be determined.
All the races will be on Saturdays, starting at 9.00 a.m.
Terence Douglas was voted president when Swan's Running Club held their annual general meeting recently. Kendra Dowling is the vice president, Larry Dunlop the treasurer and Rochelle Durham the secretary, replacing Karen Smith. Roger Lambert is the public relations officer.
ATHLETICS ATH Former Saltus student Ronan Kane continues to impress in athletic meets in Ireland.
Following a successful summer, Kane won the silver medal in the pentathlon at the All-Ireland Junior Championships in Dublin on Saturday.
And in his main event, the high jump, he set a new personal best of six feet, eight inches -- two inches above his previous mark.
Saturday's meet marked Kane's second competitive attempt at the pentathlon, having won silver also at the Leinster Championships two weeks ago.
Earlier in the summer he represented Ireland in the high jump against England, Scotland and Wales, coming away with the bronze medal.
KARATE MAT Bermuda Karate Institute has been selected by the World Karate Organisation (WKO) to host the first WKO Pan-American Championships next year.
According to Karate Institute spokeswoman, Kristina Ingham, Bermuda Department of Tourism have agreed to help promote the event, which will take place from November 19 to 23, 1997.
Some 400 competitors are expected on the Island, the largest contingents from USA, Canada and Brazil.
WKO is headed by Ennio Falsoni of Milan, Italy and held their first world championships in Mestre, Italy in 1992. At the second world championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1994, Bermuda's Gladwin (Roots) Phillips struck gold in the traditional karate sparring 67kg weight division.
Bermuda failed to get past the first round of the third WKO worlds in Hamilton, Ontario in May this year although Bermuda Karate Organisation coach Skipper Ingham took first place in the over-35 men's forms and son Zenji Ingham was first in the under-35 men's forms.
WKO currently has a membership of 25 countries.
