A very patient Berkeley Institute squad won all their games yesterday to take the Secondary Schools Junior Girls Softball tournament at Bernard Park.

Berkeley, winners of the junior division last year, got things off to a good start by defeating Whitney Institute 16-0 in their opening game and they kept their composure in the second game after the score was tied 9-9 to rally in the third inning and stop Warwick Secondary 17-11.

Berkeley coach Gladstone Thompson credited each member of his squad for their strong play, but felt the strong pitching performance of Tenia Woolridge was the key to their good fortune, particularly in their third straight win of the day, 8-0 over Warwick Secondary.

Many of Berkeley's runs were scored by way of walks, and they were bent on frustrating opposing pitchers by gladly accepting runs any way they could.

"We wore down the other pitchers,'' a proud Thompson said afterwards. "Some of the games seemed to go on forever, but we were prepared to frustrate the other teams.'' Thompson kept the same line-up intact for each game and with only 11 runs scored on them all afternoon -- all in just one of the games -- it was a combination of superb pitching and the steady infielding of first baseman Alikah Philpott, second baseman Jenna Simmons, third baseman Sia Spence and shortstop Tanika Burgess that kept the heat on opposing teams.

Berkeley also got plenty of support from its outfield of Debra James, Tyesha Thomas and Netra Dill.

Warwick Secondary finished the tournament in second place with a 3-2 record while Northlands came in third with a 2-2 mark.

Today's competition, also at Bernard Park, will feature senior girls with the boys playing tomorrow. The co-ed tournament will take place on Monday.

Berkeley swept all four categories last year and yesterday's win put them on a solid footing to repeat that feat. "We won every division last year and that's what we intend to do this year, too,'' said Thompson.
