All-star match gets green light

Bermuda School Sports Federation administrator Clint Smith yesterday confirmed that January 28 will witness the annual classic taking place at National Stadium, with all the glamour and excitement attached as in previous years.

Originally there were fears of the event being scrapped this year due to a refusal by the Island's teachers to take part in any extra curricular activities.

There is an ongoing feud between the educators and Government regarding payment -- or rather the lack of pay -- for performing these duties, hence a work-to-rule is being enforced, which has curtailed many inter and post school activities, including sports.

However, the resourceful Smith, who in an earlier report assured that he would do his utmost to ensure the occurrence of the match, has recruited an organisational team to finalise various details for the event which he said were proceeding "at a breathtaking pace''.

Meanwhile, overseas college coaches continue to express keen interest in attending the event, with Ralph Perez, the head coach at Old Dominion University, the latest to be confirmed.

Two squads have been selected to represent the East and West respectively, with Jon Beard coaching the former, while Randy Benjamin handles the latter.

At least 10 training sessions are scheduled. The West train today at Devonshire Rec., starting at 10 a.m., while the East will meet next Thursday at Berkeley Institute (4 p.m.).

East Squad: Meiko White, Jamaul Boyles, Earl Bean, U-Roy Fox, Kavin Tom, Aaron Bean, Keith Jennings (St. George's secondary); Jermain Aberdeen, Quincy Paynter, Kevin Smith, Anthony Swan, Rio Peniston, Donte Hunt, Dennis Zuill, Kiwon Dill, Tori Davis, Harry Hunt (Berkeley institute); Danny Faria, Rajee Shakir, Omar Shakir, John Best, Andre Bean, Vincent Williams-Savory (Saltus); Philip Tucker (Whitney Institute).

West Squad: Tokia Russell, Rohan Simons, Blenn Bean (Warwick Secondary); David Thomas, Stephen Botello, Jarzinho Simmons, Quinton DeShields (Warwick Academy); Tristan Abend, DeUntay Darrell, Alex DeCouto, Jeffrey Sousa (Mount St. Agnes); Marco Butterfield, Kwame Zuill, Damon Francis, Marcel Dill, Stew Tucker, Dwayne Joell (Sandys Secondary); Alanzo Cherington, Gregon Minors, Andy Williams (Northlands Secondary).

League action in the First and Second Division returns to the fore tomorrow following the Christmas sabbatical, with teams bracing for the stretch run.

Coca Cola First Division leaders Boulevard have had just over a week to make repairs to their ailing machine and hope for a better showing than that given in the Dudley Eve Trophy.

The Blazers face Devonshire Colts at Frog Lane and there is a possibility of Colts welcoming back Craig Smith to their attack after being out the last couple of months with a knee injury.

Meanwhile, newly crowned Dudley Eve Trophy champions Dandy Town would want to avoid a letdown as they entertain a flagging Somerset outfit at St. John's.

Other matches have North village travelling to face a PHC side that is unbeaten in its last four league matches (two wins, two draws), while struggling Southampton Rangers are at home to mid-table St. George's and Vasco make the trek east to face bottom team St. David's.

The Daihatsu Second Division features four matches, with leaders Devonshire Cougars taking on Somerset Eagles at the Den.

Second-placed BAA welcome Wolves, third, while Hamilton Parish are away to Prospect and Port Royal and Social Club facing off at White Hill field.
