... As Butterfield heads to England

England after his outings in the Heritage Day Classic cycling race and the junior road race on Monday.

The 15-year-old leaves today to take part in the Youth Championship, part of the British Sprint Triathlon Championships, in Bosworth, England, on Sunday.

Butterfield, who will be representing Bermuda and the TriHedz club at the event will be hoping to emulate his win in last year's US Championships.

President of the TriHedz club Dave Morrison, who will accompany Butterfield, said the youngster has already shown that his win in the 1997 Bank of Bermuda triathlon was no "flash in the pan,'' "He has already taken the 1998 senior National Duathlon and Sprint titles as well as finishing a close second to New York's Scott Willett in the TriGatorade.

"His running and cycling continue to develop at a remarkable pace while, more importantly, swimming -- his weakest event -- has improved substantially under the guidance of coach Beau Franklin.'' The British Spint Championships over a course consisting of a 750-metre swim, 20K bike ride and 5K run may prove to be his sternest test yet as he will face a field of around 40 juniors, many of whom have benefited from the coaching of British junior national coach Steve Trew.

Trew, who will conduct junior triathlon clinics for Bermuda's triathletes later this year, has indicated that at least one of his juniors has broken the one hour mark for the distance.

In addition, the conditions in England and the type of course will be very different from what Butterfield is used to in Bermuda: The swim is in a shallow, muddy lake and the bike ride is over a technically awkward route, featuring a section on narrow country lanes.

Morrison said Butterfield is a "very disciplined and resilient competitor (who) has shown that he relishes new challenges.

"He is unlikely to be fazed by the course or the competition.'' On Monday he finished a disappointing 18th in the 13-mile cyling race but followed up with victory -- and a new record time of 10:35 -- in the two-mile junior road running race.

A group of 25 policemen from Austria will arrive in Bermuda tomorrow for a series of sports events against the Bermuda Police Service. Soccer will be the first game played at the National Stadium on Saturday at 3.15 p.m. Admission is free.

Other sports events are tennis, road running, golf and tug-of-war. Points will be awarded for each event and carried forward to the next before an overall winner is determined.

On Sunday, tennis matches will be held at the Police courts at 10.00 a.m., followed by a 10K road race in the afternoon.

The morning events on Monday will be taken up with golf at Southampton Princess.

Organisers hope to make the event an annual competition.
