ATHLETICS
competitors at the Heritage Invitational Track and Field meet at National Stadium on May 6.
Expected to accompany Wellman, the Island's reigning Athlete of the Year, is his coach and Olympic gold medallist Mike Conley of the United States.
Also expected on the card are American speedsters Andre Cason, the world record holder in the 60 metres (6.41 seconds) and who was second in the 100 metres at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, and team-mate Slip Watkins.
Cason is also said to be bringing Australian 200 metres ace Damien Marsh, currently possessing the fastest time this season.
Meanwhile, Canadian 5,000 metres champion Graeme Fell, winner of the recent Tropicana 10-K, will double in the 5,000 and a demonstration steeple chase event.
On the women's side, premier heptathlete Nicole Hudson and 200 and 400 metres runner Terri Dandy top the bill, with the 400 set to provide much fireworks as specialists June Parks and Genesia Eddings are also in the field.
Locals returning, aside from Wellman, include distance runner Jay Donawa, Carifta Games sprinter Keivon Richardson and middle distance runner Tony Bean.
"We are once again looking to build our junior programme,'' said meet director Mike Charles. "The focus will be placed on our junior programme.
There will be events for the under and over 10 boys and girls, including the 100, 200 and 400 as well as relays.'' Bermuda-based athletes Stephen Woodley, Mike Donawa, Vernae Ingham and Jarita Dill, fresh from their success at the Carifta Games in Barbados will also have a chance to show off their talents for local fans against the elite competitors.
However, two notable absentees will be 5,000 metres champion Terrance Armstrong and Olympian Troy Douglas.
Armstrong will be unavailable due to a scheduling conflict, while Troy Douglas is currently competing and training in Europe.
