International 10K -- but today he will be taking it steady.

The multi-talented teenager, who leaves the Island later this month to study in Australia, said he had toned down his training to minimal levels after a tough year 2000.

In last year's 10K, the top triathlete and cyclist was the third Bermudian to finish, behind Terrance Armstrong and Jay Donawa, and 11th overall in a time of 34:29.

Butterfield said: "I've been out cycling once a week and running once a week.

I haven't trained like I normally do, so I'm not looking to beat my time from last year or anything. I've been taking a break because I was training hard late in the year last year. I figured it wouldn't be worth it to start training again so early in the year.'' Butterfield performed well in his first Junior World Cycling Championships last October in France, where he finished 102nd in the road race and 54th in the time trial.

And he said he would like to have another crack at the same event next October, but for his first few months Down Under he would concentrate on triathlon.

"I'm hoping to do a lot of swimming down there in the early part of the year and then do a lot of running and cycling. I'm looking to do a few triathlons down there.'' And rather than making a choice between cycling and triathlon, Butterfield clearly wants the best of both worlds.

"I'd like to do both,'' he said. "I know the Triathlon World Championships are on July 21 and 22 in Edmonton, Canada, and the cycling worlds are at the end of October.

"I'd like to do some triathlons in the early part of the year and then do the Junior World Cycling Championships again.'' Butterfield will fly into the Australian summer on January 23 and will begin his year of studies at Southport High School on the Gold Coast a week later.

Tyler Butterfield: heading to Australia later this month.
