Avila led pot-pouri of teams
to Avila Golf and Country Club as the Floridians ruled Castle Harbour.
Unperturbed by the less than desirable blustery conditions, Avila had its two entrants in this year's classic position themselves at one and two among the net division after the first round.
Avila G&CC II, led by professional Jim Blanks and also containing Cary Williams, Bill Garrett and Alan Reeves III, carded a combined 129 to hold a two-stroke advantage over club mates Avila G&CC I.
Third was Oakland Country Club another stroke back as a mere five strokes separated the top six teams.
Joint third a year ago, the men from down south appeared bent on assuming the mantle relinquished by 1993 champions Chateau Elan, who decided against sending a team this year.
Still a wary eye must be kept on the Cripple Creek foursome of Bob Crowther, Yogi Patel, Tom Valdivia and Wayne Barber of Maryland, who produced a scintillating final round last year.
A similar scenario also unfurled in the gross section, with Avila G&CC II enjoying a healthy six-stroke lead over the first team, 140 compared to 146.
Dave Purcell and Madeline Joell each picked up eight points to go towards team selection for the World Amateur Golf Council Team Championship in France after winning their categories of the BGA medal play on Saturday at Ocean View.
Purcell was the overall winner with a 69, finishing two strokes ahead of Scott Mayne and Tony Readwin who tied on 71 and collected five points each. Barry DeCouto, third with a 73, earned two points.
Joell was sixth overall after her 75 gave her a three-stroke win over Pat Morgan who gained six points. Judithanne Astwood was next for the women with an 82 which earned her four points.
The BGA will hold its first major tournament for 1994 when the 65th Men's Amateur Match Play Championship is held at Mid Ocean from March 15 to 19. The deadline for entries is on March 1.
