Basden banned five games

been banned by the Bermuda Football Association for an incident in the recent FA Cup match between the two teams at Wellington Oval.

But Clay Smith of St. George's was cleared of any wrongdoing by the same disciplinary board on Wednesday night.

The trio were called up to answer charges of bringing the game into disrepute, which arose from the match on January 10.

After being found guilty Basden was slapped with a five-match suspension and Duvall Smith a three-match suspension for their part in an off-the-ball incident.

Clay Smith insisted there was a case of mistaken identity when he was mentioned in the match report as punching Basden after being provoked in an off-the-ball incident, which referee Gregory apparently did not see.

Smith pleaded not guilty to the charge at the disciplinary hearing and was cleared because of insufficient evidence.

But Duvall Smith and Basden were not so fortunate as they were found guilty of throwing punches in another incident, which resulted in Smith being taken off the field with blood streaming down his face.

Reports were submitted by BFA officials Fred (Pinks) Lewis and Gregory Grimes, but while St. George's coach Gregory Foggo confirmed last night that his club will not be appealing the suspension of Smith, Somerset are understood to be considering an appeal on the suspension of Basden, their second leading goal-scorer. They will make a final decision this weekend.

"It affects us tremendously because we are pushing for the league and are still in contention for both the Friendship (Trophy) and FA (Cup),'' said assistant coach Josef Gooden. "It's definitely a harsh decision.'' The bad blood between the two teams developed when St. George's shocked the then league leaders 4-2 just the week before the Trojans gained revenge with their 2-0 win in the FA Cup. The teams will meet for a fourth time this season on Tuesday night in the Friendship Trophy quarter-finals.

The highlights of Rotherham's FA Cup match with Newcastle United will be viewed again on Monday night starting at 8.00 on VSB, channel 11 (cable 4).

The tape, featuring Bermudian Shawn Goater, was shown last Monday but there was some mix-up in the time publicised. The first match finished 1-1 and Newcastle won the replay this week 2-0.

The Commercial Division Group B match today between Prison Officers and Devonshire Colts All-Stars will be held at Malabar field at 3 p.m.
