BBC cuts three-year soccer deal
yesterday signed a three-year television/radio deal allowing the former exclusive rights to all BFA matches.
This will mean a regular Game of the Week broadcast and, in addition, there are several other provisions in place to further aid enhancement of soccer in the community.
Weekly spots on the popular radio show Talking Sport , a one-hour programme per month, as well as regularly scheduled television features are also contained in the package.
"Years ago soccer was carried a lot by the electronic media and had a higher profile and we are proposing to build on that,'' said BBC general manager Rick Richardson.
"For us, it gives increased community contact and for the game it allows for more exposure.
"My view of the role of local TV and radio is just that...local.
"And while we have several sporting shows, which we get from our CBS and ABC affiliates, what will separate us is our increase of local content and what better way to do it than through sport, which crosses all age groups, colour barriers and all segments of the spectrum.
"This (soccer) is just the first step and we intend to provide more.'' No monetary fee was charged by the BFA, although this was not ruled out in the future if the venture proves profitable enough.
However, the BBC will have an array of normal production costs and the need to attract sponsors for the various events.
BFA president Charlie Marshall welcomed the BBC on board and was excited at the prospect of expanding the base of soccer on the Island.
"This will expose soccer and highlight in the manner as our national sport should be,'' said Marshall. "It also gives our affiliates their moment in the limelight and a chance to show the community what it is their clubs are doing.'' Tomorrow has the Coca-Cola First Division match between leaders North Village and Vasco being aired live on 1340 AM radio.*l
