Belboda fires treble as Bermuda rebound
Hispanic All-Stars 1 Bermuda 4 A bizarre goal from Marvin Belboda secured a hat-trick for the Devonshire Colts striker and Bermuda a 4-1 victory as the Island's US tour drew to a close on Sunday night.
Mark Trott's men bounced back from their 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Nashville Metros of the US A League on Saturday, dominating the Hispanic All-Stars from start to finish.
PHC's Stanton Lewis also got his name on the scoresheet but it was Belboda's triple that proved the talking point of the game.
Having already netted twice, the big man took advantage of an incredible gaffe by the Hispanic side's goalkeeper as the game drifted into injury time.
Dwight Basden collided with the 'keeper who thought he had been awarded a free kick for the challenge.
However, the alert Belboda knew otherwise and when the 'keeper placed the ball on the ground and stepped back in readiness to take the `kick', Belboda nipped in and pushed it past him into the unguarded net.
Team manager, Jon Beard, said he had been very pleased with the tour.
"The training trip has achieved its goals,'' he said. "We were able to identify those players who will make up the basis for our short-term development.
"It has shown that tactically and technically we are not a million miles away from anyone else and what must be done to improve these areas.
"Finally, it achieved the goal of cementing team unity -- and the players have done a first class job of developing a `club' spirit within the national programme.'' Although Bermuda controlled the game against the Hispanics, they initially made hard work of turning their superiority into goals.
However, they were not helped by the non-stop match commentary which blasted out over the tannoy at Ezzel Stadium in Spanish! Belboda and Stephen Astwood both missed good opportunities early on and it took a rare sortee from the home side for Bermuda to get into top gear.
Troy Hall saved well from Menendez and turned defence into attack. Belboda latched on to the ball, beat the final defender and placed his shot past the advancing 'keeper.
Although Karl Roberts and Astwood fashioned other chances, the first half drew to a rather tame close.
The second period began much the same as the first ended for the Islanders and after 17 minutes it was no surprise when the Hispanics drew level.
An errant back pass from Karl Roberts was seized upon by Soldiera who gave Hall no chance from close in.
This fired Bermuda up and five minutes later Belboda put his side back in front, accepting a cross and lobbing the 'keeper.
Basden and Jamaul Boyles then went close before Lewis made it 3-1 after great work by Carlos Smith.
Belboda's cheeky third and Bermuda's fourth proved to be the last kick of the game.
Head coach Trott said he was happy with the performance but issued a word of caution.
"The opponents were not as strong as the Metros and we must learn to be more professional and dispatch such opponents quickly,'' he said.
