Belco hit by St. David's power surge
St. David's settled this FA Cup tie with Belco in brutalising fashion when three goals in the first half and four in the second lifted them to an impressive win at BAA field.
Now they have to prepare to meet Vasco in the first round for the third time in four years.
"I feel with the young team we have that if we decide to play together as one we will give Vasco a run for their money,'' said stand-in coach Del Hollis after the match.
"Comparing us together we play the same type of football (as Vasco) and we basically have more than one goal scorer. Anybody would have preferred to avoid them but if it comes that way we will take them.'' Belco were in the match until midway through the first half when Martin Vernon equalised in the 25th minute from a rebound to cancel out Lionel Cann's 13th minute opener.
However, they were never in contention after that as a younger and fitter St.
David's regained the lead in the 27th minute through Sergio Goater following a slick move and extended the lead a minute before the break when Patrick White beat Bruce Foggo with a low shot.
St. David's returned to their attacking mood in the second half with Goater making it 4-1 after converting a perfect cross from Chae Simmons and in the 64th minute the lead was extended even further when Cann scored his second after a cross from Jawan Thomas came off the back of substitute Worrell Bean to set up Cann.
Peter Rickards added to the scoring with a deflected own goal in the 76th minute and then substitute Kanhai Fray scored the seventh five minutes from the end.
The replay between Lobster Pot and Social Club, scheduled to be the curtain-raiser of the double-header at BAA last night, was postponed late in the afternoon.
The match was originally scheduled for PHC Stadium but attempts were made early yesterday to switch the match to BAA Field because the PHC lights were not working.
However the Bermuda Football Association apparently told the two teams of their decision to call the game off because the mandatory notification period of 24 hours for the venue change had not been given.
"We weren't bothered by the cancellation when informed by the BFA about 4p.m.,'' said Rob Eastham of Lobster Pot.
"We have a few injuries and a few extra days off will help us a lot.'' But the tardiness with which the BFA went about rescheduling the game left a few people questioning their methods.
On Monday night the BFA announced that the game would be played at PHC at 8p.m. on Tuesday while the other game between Belco and St. David's, which was not played on Sunday, was scheduled for BAA at the same time.
Then yesterday afternoon around noon another switch was made with the BFA announcing that both games will be played at BAA.
However while eventually reaching the teams later in the day to advise them the match was off, the public was not properly informed.
Even gatemen at BAA, including some club officials, were clearly mystified by the developments and struggled to come up with answers for the paying public when questioned about why the first game not being played.
