Berkeley, Saltus rate a high five
Federation Badminton Tournament at Saltus Gym, each winning five titles.
However, because they had more players in the finals, Berkeley emerged as the champion school with Saltus finishing as runners-up. Berkeley won the Under-13 girls doubles, Over-15 girls singles and doubles and Under-15 boys singles and doubles titles.
Saltus' five titles came in the Under-13 boys doubles, Under-15 girls singles and doubles and Over-15 singles and doubles. Warwick Academy won the other two titles, the Under-13 girls singles and Under-13 boys singles.
Rekan Pearman of Berkeley and Warwick Academy's Claudia Cabral both reached the two Under-13 girls finals, Cabral beating Pearman in the singles 11-9 before Pearman, and partner Jennifer Fox, took the doubles by beating Cabral and Betsy Mendonca 11-2.
Bonnie Liebowitch of Saltus landed two titles in the Under-15 girls, winning the singles against school-mate Fiona Herring 15-3 and then teaming up with Lisa Shaw to defeat Berkeley's pair, Charna Stowe and Kristin White, 11-3.
Tracey Harvey matched Liebowitch's achievement when she won both the Over-15 girls singles and doubles titles for Berkeley. Harvey beat Saltus' Selena Mello in the singles 15-5 and then teamed up with Kijuana Robinson to beat Jodie Floyd and Melissa Williams of MSA 15-1 in the doubles final.
Two of the boys divisions produced double winners as Jenson Bascome of Berkeley won the Under-15 boys singles and doubles titles. He beat Aaron Williams in an all-Berkeley final 11-8 and then partnered Williams to beat Jason Laude and Gary Adams of Warwick Academy 15-4.
Hywel Brown of Saltus won both the Over-15 finals as he beat Lionel Bean of Berkeley in the singles 15-7 before joining Marco Bartoli to stop Bean and Peter Medeiros 15-10 in the doubles.
In the Under-13 finals, Joell Duffy of Warwick Academy beat Kevin Richards of Saltus in the singles 11-7, but Richards made up for it when he and Keith Caines got together to beat Andrew Simons and Ralph Robinson of Berkeley 11-5 in the doubles.
HOCKEY HOC Saltus won both the girls junior and senior tournaments of the Interschool Tournament held last week at National Sports Club.
Weekly participation in the Ladies Hockey League has clearly given Saltus the edge as their A team clinched their fourth consecutive championship in the junior category, finishing with a two-win, two-draw record.
The six points amassed by Saltus A was one better than Bermuda High School who had to settle for second place for the fourth straight year. Their record was one win and three draws.
Outstanding player of the tournament was Saltus' Danielle Skinner who led her team with three goals. Saltus captain Catherine Dunleavy scored two goals for the champions.
Saltus A had the biggest win in the junior division, beating Warwick Academy 5-0. However, no other match produced more than one goal as there were two other wins by a 1-0 scoreline -- Saltus A over Northlands and Northlands over Saltus B. The other seven matches finished in scoreless draws.
Goals were also hard to come by in the hotly contested senior division, where Saltus again triumphed, winning two of their games and drawing the third.
Well-earned runners-up were Northlands who had a win and two draws for four points, just one behind Saltus. BHS finished third with a win, loss and draw.
Outstanding player in the senior division was Sarine Babb, a junior who played in goal for Northlands. She stopped many hard shots in numerous one-on-one situations.
