Bermuda banking on help from Regiment

World Cup goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams will return from school abroad to reclaim his place in the Bermuda team tonight against Antigua at Somerset.

But whether another North Village player, Kofi Dill, joins him in the line-up for his senior team debut will depend on the cooperation of the Bermuda Regiment.

Bermuda Football Association Technical Director Clyde Best confirmed yesterday that the North Village defender was very much in his plans for tonight's opening tour match at Somerset (8.00) against an Antiguan team who arrived late last night.

The Regiment hold the trump card on whether or not the Village defender makes his first appearance for the senior team. Dill is one of the recruits going through two weeks of intensive boot camp training and may not be released.

Yesterday the BFA were in the process of communicating with the Regiment over the release of Dill and his cousin, striker Kaiwon Dill.

"Kofi has been in the under-20s, the under-21s and now the national team, so I really like the progress he's made,'' said Best yesterday.

"He's a fantastic player to have involved in the programme right now and I'm looking for some good things from Kofi in the future.

Best was awaiting mandatory drug testing on some other players before confirming his squad for the two matches, although a party of 16 has been named for tonight's opening game. Adams is one of those awaiting the results and he will share the goalkeeping duties with Tim Figureido.

Veteran Kentoine Jennings is also in the coaches' plans for tonight. But Best is not reluctant to try a few new faces.

"You can't be afraid at this stage, because you have to find out if they can play beforehand,'' he stated.

"A lot of the boys played in the under-23s before when Mr (Burkhard) Ziese was here so they know what has to be done. I would like to get as many of those players as possible, simply because they understand the system.

"Having seen them in practice the last couple of weekends, they really understand what I want.'' One player who may have to wait a little longer for his chance is Devonshire Colts midfielder Jahmah Samuels who went off after 30 minutes on Sunday against Boulevard. "I was told that Jahmah hurt his ankle and we had him in our plans so there is a possibility he could be out,'' Best added.

The coach has already made it known he will use the two tour matches to expose some new faces as Shell Cup preparations begin. Shannon Burgess of Devonshire Colts will retain the captaincy while another player likely to be given a starting spot is PHC striker Kenny Mills who has impressed Best.

"I believe in having someone sound at the back and he (Burgess) does a good job for us there,'' said Best.

"In practice I like Kenny Mills. I like his touch and his presence and he seems to know where the goal is. He is unpredictable because he can do so many different things. But what I'm really impressed about with Kenny is his first touch which is excellent.'' Squads Bermuda: Tim Figureido, Clifford Roberts, Karl Roberts, Keishon Smith, Shannon Burgess, Kentoine Jennings, Kofi Dill, Ascento Russell, Kenny Mills, Otis Steede, Stanton Lewis, Diallo Sharrieff, Kaiwon Dill, Devarr Boyles, Devon Binns, Dennis Robinson. Fire Service continued their push for a first Commercial League title, hammering Prison Officers 11-0 on Saturday. Mark (Beaver) Ray netted four times while Tracy Bean also scored a hat-trick and Bo Saggar, Roger Dill, Troy Furbert and sub Kenneth Bartrum got the others.

Defending champions BAA Wanderers had a good win, coming from behind to beat North Village Rams 4-1. Leroy Wilson gave the Rams an early lead but Wanderers replied through Wayne DeSilva (2), Martin Jones and Andy McCulloch.
