Bermuda boxers enjoy partial success

their recent jaunt to Denver where they participated in a tournament hosted by the Denver Police Brotherhood boxing team.

It was the first time any of the Bermuda contingent had experienced the high altitude of the Rockies and all of them suffered the effects of the atmosphere.

Youngsters Melvin Martin and Jahvon Washington represented the West End Gym and Iain Jamieson and Gregory Todd the Police Boxing Section. Martin scored a TKO over Roman Trujillo in a very evenly matched contest as the two boxers went at each other from the opening bell.

Several furious exchanges were made in the early stages of the first round with Martin getting in the cleaner punches. Near the end of the round, Martin landed a combination which left his opponent reeling as the referee administered a standing eight count from which Trujillo was unable to continue.

Washington's fight with Lester Tuell was also scheduled for three rounds but also did not go past the first round. Unfortunately, the Bermudian lost on the three-standing-eight-counts-in-one-round rule.

Washington was visibly upset by the decision as he felt that his opponent had not hurt him with any of his punches.

The senior fighters were also scheduled for three rounds, with Jamieson, in the heavyweight category, winning a decision in his maiden fight. Despite going up against a heavier and harder punching opponent, Jamieson overcame a nervous start and started to show promise with some neat footwork and counter-punching against his advancing adversary.

Towards the end of round one, Jamieson was caught by a vicious left hook that left him on the seat of his pants. However, he got back to his feet on the count of six and held on to the end of the round.

Rounds two and three had Howell being the more aggressive but Jamieson landed well with his jab to outscore his opponent by the judges' ruling.

Gregory Todd, in the super heavyweight, came up against a more experienced opponent in Randy Romero and in only his second fight, Todd lost in the first round. Despite holding his own, Todd took some telling punches from Romero.
