Bermuda capture six carifta medals

CARIFTA Games in Martinique, which saw the squad capture six medals and where eight athletes established new personal bests in 14 events.

Rohaan Simons won a silver medal when he jumped a personal best 14.44 metres (47 feet, 41 inches) in the under-17 boys triple jump and then won a bronze medal in the high jump -- another personal best -- with a jump of 1.97 metres (6-51 ).

Four other athletes were proudly displaying their bronze medals last night -- Donte Hunt, Michael Donawa, Stephen Woodley and Vernae Ingham.

Hunt, the only athlete to compete in three events, won his bronze in the under-17 100 metres, but finished sixth in the 200 metres final after posting a time of 22.97 seconds. He was fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 45-61 .

Donawa was presented with his bronze after running a personal best 1:58.84 in the under-17 boys 800 metre final late on Sunday.

Ingham, who had earlier captured her bronze in the under-17 girls 1,500 metres, established a personal high when she ran the 800 metres semifinal race in 2:21.8, but finished in sixth place.

After leading the under-20 boys long jump for four rounds, Aaron Bean finished fourth overall with a jump of 7.05 metres.

Sharif Taylor was 13th in the under-20 boys 1,500 metres final after posting a time of 4.19. Keivon Richardson qualified for the under-20 boys 200 metresfinal, and placed sixth after he clocked 22.10 seconds.

Bermuda's athletes competed in 26 events and qualified for 17 finals. Woodley established his seasonal best mark in the under-20 high jump with a leap of 2.02 metres (6-71 ).

"We are all very pleased,'' national coach Gerry Swan said yesterday. "All our athletes did a splendid job.'' Bermuda's athletes also compiled four fourth-place finishes, one fifth-place finish and three athletes completed their events in sixth spot.

Other athletes who established personal bests were Atiba Tucker in the under-20 boys 100 metres (11.13) and 200 metres (22.27) events; Richardson in the 100 metres (11.12); and Jarita Dill who twice lowered her best in the under-17 400 metres -- 58.71 in the semifinals and 57.68 in the final where she was fourth.
