James, playing in the 15-17 age group, leads his division with a two-round total of 142, five ahead of Canadian Calvin Kupeyan, who shot a 76. James also leads the overall boys by two shots over Craig Brown in the 18-21 age group.
Brown leads the 18-21 age group after his three-over-par 74 while Gary Innes of Canada had a par 70. His six birdie round was offset by three double bogeys.
Girls overnight leader, Sarah Thomson, increased her overall lead to four shots with a round of 81. Jameica Duncombe shot 83 to remain in second place.
The boys 13-14 age group became competitive when first -round leader Neil Fenton ballooned to a 91, leaving him trailing Austin Chase of Canada by one shot.
Fraser Hunt fired the best score of the day in the boys 12 and under age group with a nine-hole 39 to cut Aaron James' lead to five shots.
The third round will take place at Port Royal today.
