Bermuda mean frustrate champions

day of the 15th Bermuda Hockey Festival yesterday, holding defending champions Staffhawks to a 0-0 draw at National Sports Club.

Staffhawks, trying to win their third consecutive championship, met a gritty and determined Bermuda outfit and were frustrated on numerous occasions by goalkeeper Donny Moniz.

The players on both teams found the flavour of the match almost as heated as the elements with Bermuda's Mark Ray finding himself in a melee with Staffhawk players, barely avoiding a red card.

Simon Staffurth, the superb Staffhawks goalkeeper, was also at the top of his game as he singlehandedly stole the spotlight once again when the English club squared off against Greenwich for their second game and 4-0 for their first win.

But it was defending women's champions Mocklow's Magic -- a team made up of all-stars from Canada, United States and England -- who overwhelmed their opening day opponents, defeating Bermuda's Flashy Forties 3-0 in their first game and demolishing Pingree School from Hamilton, Massachusetts, 8-0 during an afternoon encounter.

Mocklow's lived up to their monicker and were undeniably magical getting a hat-trick from Trish MacBride and two goals from Anita Bolusius to build an impressive lead against Pingree. Susan Wood, Amy Wood and Cindy Gahunia added singles.

The Bermuda women's CAC squad won both their games with goalkeepers Fiona Doe and Zita Bean stifling the opposition as much as the hot conditions on the pitch. Doe shut out Wesleyan 1-0 in the opening game with Maria Pichery scoring and then Bean slammed the door on BSC Young Boys 1-0 later in the day.

During their first game, Pingree got the upper hand over the Bermuda Under-21 squad and squeaked out a 2-1 victory with goals from Sarah Mendelson and Jess Riese. Lisa Haynes scored the lone tally for Bermuda, who later lost to Babson College 3-0.

Babson had an easy time against Bermuda with Kerry McLaughlin scorching two goals past a beleaguered squad. Nicole Manning scored the other goal. Babson started the day with 1-1 draw against Flashy Forties.

Wesleyan were coming off a 0-0 draw against Toronto Ladies, who also managed a 1-1 draw against BSC Young Boys, a team from Bern, Switzerland. Diane Frie scored for BSC with Carolyn Molyneaux chipping in for Toronto.

In the other men's game, Toronto's Andrew Griffiths, who gew up in Bermuda, scored four goals as the Canadian squad defeated Bermuda Select 4-0.

STRETCHING A POINT -- Bermuda's Kirk Edmunds keeps two Staffhawks players at bay during yesterday's scoreless draw at Nationals.
