Bermuda squad heads for US Open
States Open Team Championships this weekend.
Both Dave Waltham and Myron Piper will be making their debut in the tournament.
Waltham (16-2) is in the four-man A team which will be spearheaded by Nick Frost (9-0) and also includes Philip Hackett (19-2) and Rawle Frederick (16-5).
The B team consists of Roderick Masters (11-4), Piper (14-7), Alden Ray (10-11) and Owen Hunt, a Canada-based college student who will make his own way down to the tournament.
With Dennis Pearman injured and Derron Trott and Calvin Butterfield unavailable, manager Mansfield Smith and coach-trainer Francois Ternier have been registered to play if required.
Smith, meanwhile, is anxious to have his bat, which went missing at the Junior Open Tournament over the weekend, returned before the team depart.
The bat was one of four which was being used by the youngsters for the tournament at Elliott Primary School gym and costs more than $100 to replace locally.
Only 14 boys and two girls participated in the tournament which was designed to encourage new talent. Because of the small field it was decided to use the round robin format which met with success as some promising talent was spotted.
Vincent Minors (16) won the 14-17 age group when he finished with a 6-0 record after wins over James Godington, Travis Smith, Nelson Bascome, Marquel DeShields, Ben Dier and Geamar Outerbridge. Only Smith and Dier took Minors to three games, with the Minors-Dier game being one of the most exciting, Minors winning 21-13, 14-21, 22-20.
Dier (12) placed second overall, with a 5-1 record while Smith was third with four wins and two losses. He proved unbeatable in his own age group, 11-13, in which he won all five of his matches. Allan Outerbridge was second with a 4-1 record and Ryan Marshall third on 3-2. Gavin Manders was another who played out of his age group. He was third overall in the boys 11-13 with a 2-3 record but fared better in his own age group (7-10) where he placed first after beating Tyler Marshall 21-8, 21-9 and Brian Phipps 21-5, 21-10.
Gabriella Salvia won the girls division with Jahnie Fox placing second.
