Bermuda squad `learn' from London thrashing

English side London Welsh in London on Saturday. But John Williams, president of Bermuda Rugby Football Union, who accompanied the squad, described the defeat as one "from which local players could only benefit.'' "It was a great experience for our young players, and they thoroughly enjoyed it,'' said Williams. "I think all of our players will have learned a lot from this match. "About 60 percent of the London Welsh team were full-time professionals. We can't be expected to compete at that level. But we can learn from it.'' Williams explained that Bermuda's squad was missing several key players and they even had to "borrow'' two English players to make up a team, while London Welsh, who had been expected to field their second XV, actually played a number of first XV pros.

"They thought we were bringing our Caribbean championship-winning team and that's why they put out a much stronger squad,'' said Williams. "And we thought we were just playing the second XV, who probably would have beaten us by no more than 20 points.'' London Welsh led 29-3 at the half and poured in another 25 points after the break. Bermuda's three points came from the boot of guest player Ralph Ollie.

"Two of our more experienced players, Alvin Harvey and Bobby Hurdle, both had good games,'' said Williams. "But I think everybody really enjoyed the experience.'' After the match, Bermuda's players travelled to Wembley where Wales pulled off a shock 32-31 victory over England to deny England the Five Nations Grand Slam.

Williams left the Island again yesterday to attend the International Rugby Union Conference in Argentina.

The domestic rugby season closes on April 25 at Nationals with the Robin Hood final between Mariners and Teachers and the Nicol Shield final between Police and Mariners. One make-up game is scheduled this Saturday between Teachers and Renegades at 3.00 p.m.
