BFA expects to fill vacancy by summer

Gary Darrell, will be filled later this summer.

Bermuda Football Association president Charlie Marshall yesterday said that there was no possibility that the individual who will be named to the $50,000 post of Director of Coaching will also be running the national squad -- a position which became available when Darrell resigned after Bermuda's fine run in the World Cup campaign which ended in December.

"The new Director will oversee the coaches of our five national teams, but he will also be involved with our schools through the Department of Education,'' said Marshall.

"We have a number of staff coaches in the country who are trained to run the senior team and we will hope to have somebody assigned to the post once the director is appointed.'' The BFA are optimistic that the person taking up the position of director will be here in time for the start of the school year with Marshall claiming that both CONCACAF and FIFA were assisting the association in screening the applicants.

Although the president was unable to give a specific number of people who applied, he revealed that the response was "tremendous'' with individuals worldwide showing an interest -- from Brazil, England, Europe, Africa and Yugoslavia.

There continues to be strong interest in soccer during the summer months with numerous six-a-side and training camps scheduled to take place.

The Kenny Thompson Six-A-Side tournament is one of the biggest attractions with organisers now contemplating increasing the number of teams from 12 to 16 because of the overwhelming response. It will run from July 11-25. Also for the first time is an Under-12 competition and the search is now on for two additional teams to join the six that have already entered.

Armell Thomas, who is in charge of marketing, said that this year will undoubtedly be their busiest and that they were looking forward to launching the youth league.

Other junior teams wishing to enter and anyone seeking further information on the tournament are asked to contact Thomas at 295-4176 days and 236-5676 evenings.
