Blazers bitten by transfer bug
First Division powers Boulevard.
The trio were among a list of a whopping 292 players meeting yesterday's transfer deadline, which is up considerably from the 188 who moved last season.
There was a beehive of activity at the BFA office yesterday. Going into the day only five had transferred leaving the association with 277 transfers to process before the 5 p.m. deadline.
"It was certainly one of our busiest days for transfers,'' said administrative assistant Joe L. Brown.
The final count showed 104 players transferring within the First Division, 122 within the Second and 49 within the Commercial Division.
The clubs receiving the most players were Vasco, BAA and St. David's, each with 17 while those who had no players joining them were Second Division Warwick United and Devonshire Cougars.
Among the First Division clubs taking on the most new players were North Village and Hamilton International with 14 each, Hamilton Parish with 13, Devonshire Colts and Dandy Town 12 apiece and Somerset 11.
Boulevard were hard hit by the exodus of at least four prominent players, including left-back Albert Caisey and defender George Smith, adding credence to speculation that something is awry at the Pembroke club.
While each of the transactions come as a surprise since the club has been tremendously successful over the past two seasons, it is a mystery why player/coach Andrew has decided to move in an opposite direction to his younger brothers.
The 1990-91 season Coach of the Year has moved to Somerset Extros who compete in the depths of the Commercial Division Group B league while his two younger brothers have joined promoted Second Division champions St. David's.
Andrew transformed Boulevard into a force in local soccer since joining them from North Village with David two seasons ago. Herbie had made a similiar move a season before.
The trio made an immediate impact when they teamed up for the 1990-91 season, which turned out to be the best year the club had ever experienced, as they won the FA Cup and First Division title. David also won the Most Valuable Player award that season.
Last season Boulevard remained a force although they were not as successful.
The only major award they won was the Dudley Eve Trophy but they stayed in the race for the league title before losing out to PHC and finishing second.
Andrew's move to Extros was processed after a failed attempt to rejoin North Village. The Red Devils wanted to meet with Bascome before accepting him back into the fold but such a meeting never took place before a club-enforced deadline.
Bascome's connection to Extros is long-time associate Andre (Paulos) Wolffe.
Another move raising a few eyebrows is Ricky Hill switching back to Hamilton International after leaving them last season to captain Hamilton Parish.
St. George's were attempting to get national team defender Neil Paynter back from Dandy Town by having a transfer form sent to his college in West Virginia for him to sign.
But Paynter, who expects to go the English Fourth Division side Scarborough for trials this summer, did not return the form in time to beat the deadline.
Other big names confirmed on the move are: Randy Darrell from Dandy Town to Hanmilton International; Phillip Clarke and Shawn Smith from Devonshire Cougars to North Village; Walter Musson from Hamilton International to Dandy Town; Ricky Mallory and Earl Richardson from Dandy Town to Vasco; Paul Towlson and Scott Morton from Hamilton International to Vasco; Karl Roberts from Somerset to Vasco; Sherritt Hewey from North Village to Vasco; Anthony Stovell from PHC to Paget; and Kacy Simons from North Village to St. David's.
