Blazers see red in quarter-finals
would get North Village in yesterday's FA Cup quarter-final draw.
But while the Boulevard coach has no fear about facing the second best team on January 23, the same cannot be said for the Red Devils who are being asked to battle with unquestionably the best team on the Island at present.
The draw at the Bermuda Football Association office sees St. George's at home to Vasco in the other all-First Division tie while Second Division sides Devonshire Cougars and Somerset Eagles take on Dandy Town and Devonshire Colts respectively.
"We expected to be drawn like that,'' said Mallory who was pleased that his prediction came true. Obviously he expects a tough encounter in what will be the pick of the quarter-final matches, but the way Boulevard are playing at present the fear should be with their opponents.
"When you're champs I guess it's better to play the so-called best teams now,'' said Mallory. "We'll have to play them sometime. Coming in here I expected them and we got them.'' Three seasons ago, Boulevard won the league and FA Cup double and look a good bet to repeat that feat.
"We feel confident,'' said Mallory. "We set out our priorities and everything is falling into place. When we get back to full strength in the second half we should be all right.'' St. George's team manager Carlos Caisey was also at yesterday's draw, which pitted the Colts against Vasco, a team they have already beaten this season.
The quarter-final clash will be at Wellington Oval where the home team are still unbeaten. St. George's have never reached the semifinals of the competition, so that should be an extra incentive.
"I thought it was a good draw,'' said Caisey. "I'm glad we didn't get one of the Second Division teams, because I feel our players probably won't play up to standard.
"I'm glad we got Vasco, a team we've already beaten, though I'm sure we won't take them for granted.'' Devonshire Cougars, who looked deserving of their win over First Division side Southampton Rangers on Sunday, are at home again for the visit of Dandy Town.
For the second straight year Cougars could have their run in the FA Cup halted by Town.
Last year they went down 4-0 to Town in the first round but things could be closer this time.
"There are no easy teams left in the draw,'' Dandy Town captain Lloyd Christopher said. "Cougars are riding high and have been looking good all season. We play them at their home field, so it's not going to be easy.'' After beating another Second Division side, BAA, on Sunday who did Town want in the quarter-finals? "It really didn't matter too much, but we didn't want Boulevard,'' Christopher admitted. "But if each player plays up to his potential no team can beat us.'' Devonshire Colts, who reached the final as a Second Division team, know all too well that teams from the lower divisions should not be taken lightly. That is why their captain, Ellington Weldon, is not too happy with getting Somerset Eagles.
"I didn't want a team like that,'' Weldon said. "As a player I would rather play a First Division team.
"These guys can play and when we were in the Second Division we made it to the final in 1988. Playing against us they are going to raise their game and plus they have players who have played in the First Division for years.
"When you're playing a team like that, that's their biggest game and plus if you beat a First Division team you can talk.'' Three Crystal Palace Youth Cup quarter-final matches will precede the FA Cup games. Somerset take on Wolves at Devonshire Rec., Devonshire Colts meet PHC at Frog Lane and North Village play St. David's at St. David's. All the Crystal Palace matches start at 12.30 p.m. while the FA Cup matches begin at 2.30 p.m.
The draw for the Women's FA Cup semifinals also took place yesterday with Dandy Stars taking on BAA at 7 p.m. and Rude Girls meeting Somerset Terminators at 9 p.m. on February 4 at BAA field.
INSIDE EDGE -- Somerset's Andrew Rahman, left, has the step on Boulevard full-back Dean Boyles in Sunday's FA Cup first round match at St. David's. But the Blazers had the final say in a 2-0 win. They now meet North Village in the quarter-finals on January 23.
