Blazers snatch trophy with extra-time double

Boulevard 3 Vasco 2 (after extra time) In a match that was full of drama, Boulevard came from an early goal down to strike twice in extra-time and retain their Martonmere Cup title in yesterday's final at the National Stadium.

Five goals, three penalties and two red cards kept the fans entertained during an emotionally charged match that was just as exciting as Boulevard's Dwight Warren had promised it would be.

The first taste of action came in the sixth minute when Vasco took the lead through Sammy Swan's penalty after Albert Caisey brought down Meshach Wade.

Sinclair Gibbons later hit the bar for Vasco but Boulevard asserted themselves after that and finished the half strongly.

Boulevard kept up the pressure after the restart as they forced a corner in the first minute of the second half. Andre Hendrickson replaced the injured Steede in the 57th minute.

Seven minutes later Boulevard had their first chance to equalise when, in what seemed a harsh decision, referee Stuart Crockwell awarded a penalty for a challenge by Kentoine Jennings on Warren.

As far as Vasco were concerned justice was seen to be done as Stevie Wade placed his spot kick straight at goalkeeper Timmy Figureido. However, Meshach Wade, booked in the first half for dissent, swore at referee Crockwell and that resulted in the first red card.

Boulevard, too, were down to 10 men, when Donnie Charles committed a second bookable offence when he brought down Sammy Swan as he raced free of the Boulevard defence. Swan also went off, on a stretcher, to be replaced by Tillman Darrell.

There was lots of action still to come as battling Boulevard finally drew level in the 78th minute from the penalty spot when Kentoine Jennings was penalised for handball. This time Andrew Bascome stepped up to take the kick and placed his effort into Figureido's bottom left-hand corner.

Derek Stapley reclaimed his right back spot for Vasco when he came on for Trevor Dickinson who was also taken off on a stretcher though injury, although like Swan's it was not serious.

Boulevard had a couple of good chances to wrap up the match in injury time but efforts by Neil Robinson and Warren missed the target.

Andrew Bascome, his legs tightening up with cramp, put Boulevard in the lead for the first time four minutes into injury time when he met a cross from the right by substitute Kenny Hill and tucked the ball in from a sharp angle.

Vasco responded with two long range shots from Otis Steede while at the other end Boulevard's substitute Otis Minors lifted a chance over the top after Wade fed him in the box.

Caisey and Sinclair Gibbons were booked for a scuffle and it was from the resulting free kick, which went against Gibbons, that Boulevard extended their lead as two of their subs were involved.

Minors made the decisive cross from the left and Hill got the ball under control before shooting past Figureido from inside the box.

Boulevard were coasting to victory -- but getting complacent in the process -- before an own goal by Dwight Warren three minutes from the end of the second period gave them a scare.

Warren attempted to clear a corner from Keith Jennings with a cheeky flick but the ball beat his own 'keeper Hendrickson at the near post.
