Boulevard bent on cup revenge
given Boulevard a boost as they bid to retain the Martonmere Cup at National Stadium tomorrow.
Before that shock 2-0 loss to Rangers, Vasco looked unbeatable after winning all but one of their league and cup matches this season.
And with two wins over Boulevard this season in the Martonmere Cup and league, Vasco were heading into the final as clear favourites.
However, recent results, which include two good come-from-behind wins by Boulevard, have tilted the balance and opened up all sorts of possibilities for the final. It will be the third Boulevard-Vasco final in four seasons, with Vasco winning in 1994-95 and again in 1995-96.
As far as Boulevard and their fans are concerned, revenge is long overdue.
"We do have a score to settle with them,'' said Boulevard dangerman Dwight Warren. "They have beaten us on mostly every occasion we have met them in recent times.'' Warren admitted Vasco's loss to Rangers has given Boulevard more confidence for the final, which he promises will be a showdown.
"I can say confidently that it's going to be a good match,'' Warren predicted.
"Coming from Boulevard all things are possible, regardless of them having beaten us twice (this season).
"They can be beaten. We're going with that approach that they can be beaten and we know what we have to do to beat them.'' Rangers' win over Vasco shocked local football, especially with Rangers at the bottom of the standings without a win all season. But Warren cautions that too much can't be weighed into that result.
"That defeat against Rangers has given us a little booster, but each day is not the same,'' he warned.
"We can't look back at the defeat to Rangers but we have to look at what's going to be happening right there and then on the pitch. Boulevard aren't going to take Vasco, or any team, for granted.'' Boulevard are in the midst of a four-match winning streak and confidence should be high.
Vasco would have liked to have played another game before the final to try and put some things right, but at least they will be well rested, having played three matches in six days leading up to the Rangers loss.
Boulevard bent on cup revenge From Page 23 "Rangers definitely came out and out-hustled us,'' said coach John Rebello.
"They were the better team on the day. It was a loss that was inevitable.'' Vasco will be missing three players, Shawn Simons and Ascento Russell who are both injured and the suspended Dwight Basden. But there is plenty of depth in their squad to make the necessary adjustments.
"Both teams have some exciting players, players who can do lots of things with the ball,'' said Rebello who expects a tough match from Boulevard.
"They are the hottest team going right now. We have to come out there and not take things for granted. They have a great squad and when they click on all cyclinders they are a hard team.
"We have to try to shoot down their playmakers, people like `Payback' (Warren), `Diamond' (Neil Robinson) and `Drew' (Andrew Bascome). If you get those guys up at the Stadium and give them space on that big pitch they will cut you up like a butcher.'' For the first time the BFA competitions committee has scrapped the consolation match which would have involved North Village and Dandy Town, the beaten semi-finalists.
This time the opening game will involve the Bantam teams from Dandy Town and Devonshire Colts in a challenge contest, starting at 1.00 p.m.
As a result of having the day off, North Village will be in action tonight when they take on Devonshire Cougars in a rescheduled league match at Devonshire Rec. at 8.00.
