Brian battles through back strain to advance
of the men's singles at the Coral Beach Club Invitational Tennis tournament yesterday with his 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Stuart Smith.
It was a contest of changing f ortunes and tempera tures that lasted more than two hours.
The real break came when Smith was unable to hold serve with the score tied at 4-4 in the deciding set, allowing Way to take a 5-4 lead and serve for the match.
But victory wasn't to be easy as Smith fought off four match points, and even had two game points of his own before scccumbing. Way's reward, if he is able to recover in time to play his semi-final match, will be the winner of today's quarter-final match between Mike Curry and the hard-hit ting Alex Anderson.
In other men's play Earl Leader, top seed in the men's 45 section, ended the comeback bid of former Open champion Vernal Davis, and he did it in commmanding fashion, winning 6-2, 6-0 while the hotly favoured Michael Way breezed past David O'Sullivan in men's open, winning 6-1, 6-1. In possibly the surprise result of the day, Mike Beautyman eased past Dick Mount 6-2, 6-2 in the men's 45 singles.
Action continues to heat up in the women's division as Dominique Laffont stayed on course for a meeting with top seed Marnie Johnson following her win over Lexie Petty 6-4, 6-1 while Johnson beat Francesca Sinnot 6-2, 6-1 and Gill Butterfield got past Erika Hendricks 6-1, 6-1.
In mixed doubles play the top ranked pair of Kathy Stuhler and Stuart Smith ousted Heidi and Graham Boyle 6-2, 6-2 while Alice Duff and John Moore, seeded third, beat Claire Anderson and Stuart McCrae 6-1, 6-2.
Today's play will start on an exciting note with the men's 45 final where top seeded Bermudian Earl Leader takes on second seeded American Michael Beautyman at 9 a.m.
A total of 18 matches are scheduled throughout the day as the tournament reaches its final stages, with the finals scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday.
In today's schedule there is also a men's open singles match between second-seeded Greg Frigerio and Graham Boyle at 10.30 and Curry against Anderson at noon. Curry will also team up with Gill Butterfield two hours later in the mixed doubles.
