Brian leads the way for Bermuda from Sports Editor Dexter Smith
BARCELONA -- Bermuda's best Olympic medal hope Mr. Brian Wellman has been chosen by chef de mission Mr. Jimmy Amos to carry the flag at tonight's opening of the 25th Olympic Games.
Mr. Wellman's ascension to a word ranking of sixth in the triple jump made Mr.
Amos' decision simple. "I think Brian is enjoying a good season and I decided he would be the best one to do it,'' he said.
"All the ahtletes are looking forward to the opening, we are at the point now where they will all want to get on with it. Enough of training, they want to get on with it now.'' The opening ceremonies are scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Bermuda time and Mr.
Amos estimates Bermuda will march on an hour later.
Barcelona has gone all out to ensure tonight will be a success. Some of the features on display will be opera pieces, hymns and the unveiling of the biggest Olympic flag in the history of the Games.
The flag is bigger than any soccer field in Bermuda and weighs 1,764 pounds.
The unveiling taks has been handed to the 10,000 athletes. More on the Olympics -- Page 13.
