Bromby hot favourite for Government award
Peter Bromby appears odds-on to be crowned Bermuda's Sportsman of the Year tonight when the Sports Awards ceremony takes place at Fairmount Princess, but even an educated guess on who will be the top sportswoman is difficult to make.
Bromby, who along with Lee White flirted with the Star Class bronze medal at last year's Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, is a red-hot favourite. With no other male athlete coming close to such an accomplishment except, perhaps, soccer's Shaun Goater, who played a key role in English club Manchester City gaining promotion, it would seem difficult to award it to anyone but Bromby.
On the female side Zarah DeSilva rates a top contender based on her rise to becoming Bermuda's top women's tennis player, this after leading Bermuda to their best-ever showing at the Federation Cup in El Salvador, where the team recorded two victories.
Sara Lane Wright also made inroads internationally while competing in the Europe Dinghy Class of sailing, although her year ended with disappointment in Sydney, where she placed well down the field.
Fitness queen Aprille DeShield made a statement for body building and fitness as legitimate sports in seizing first-place honours at the CAC Body Building and Fitness Championships hosted by Bermuda for the first time in November.
There was also Anna Eatherley, who romped to her third Marathon Derby title and generally had her way among road running circles.
Still, if there is a favourite among the women it would have to be 17-year-old golf prodigy Laura Robinson, who became the youngest-ever Women's Match Play champion, and, for good measure, added the Stroke Play title later on.
In between she also recorded victories in Canada at the Canadian Junior Golf Championships, Ontario Junior Golf Championships and returned home to take the Glidden Bowl. There were second place finishes at the Willo-Dell Junior Open and a third at the Atlantic International Championships as well.
The ceremony, which also includes special achievement and honorary awards, will start at 7.30 p.m.
