Low wind conditions on day two of the third Annual Black Seal Cup forced race organisers to cancel crucial tie-breaking match-ups after teams had competed for eight hours in dying breeze.

"We have a result, but we didn't get the kind of result we had hoped for,'' admitted a race spokesman.

"We got through the semi-finals today, then there were the races that were scheduled this afternoon,'' officials for the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club explained on Sunday.

"They each completed two, and everybody won one race, but because we ended up with a tie, the tie had to be decided by reverting to (yesterday's) round robin scores.'' Final scores placed Bromby in the lead (7-0), followed closely by Paula Lewin (6-1) and Glenn Astwood (5-2).

Skippers John Corless, Christian Luthi, Shelagh Tasker, Rick Harnett, and Mickey Berkeley were the respective finishers.

Bromby said he was frustrated by the poor weather conditions and lack of clear victory, but admitted there was little which could be done.

"There's probably no clear answer to it,'' he said. "It's not unheard of, it happens at the very highest of levels of our sport. It's like everybody being even in golf match, and then it raining for a week,'' he added.

The Black Seal Cup serves the dual purpose of determining a national match race champion and providing two local entries for the international Gold Cup in October.

Gosling Brothers' Ltd. supply the entry fees for the Black Seal Cup's winner and runner-up for the prestigious event.

However, Bromby has chosen decline the offer because of a sponsorship conflict. He will instead enter himself.

As a result, third place finisher Astwood will join Lewin as "Team Black Seal'' and Bermuda will have three entries in this year's Gold Cup to challenge 24 of the top international match-racing teams in the October 17 to 25 event.
