Butler was irresponsible -- Bailey

remarks by Randy Butler as "inaccurate and irresponsible'', in the wake of the umpire's indefinite ban.

Bailey explained in a press release that a full inquiry is being launched by the BCBC to look into the matter involving Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association president Butler who commented in a The Royal Gazette article that the board knows of bowlers who throw the ball and has done nothing about it.

"Mr. Butler's side will be heard in due course,'' said the top cricket official.

The matter came to light when it was publicised that the bowling actions of two Bermuda national team players, Gary Brangman and Dale Fox, came under scrutiny during the recent tour of Barbados.

Butler followed up with comments of his own a few days later, saying that members of his association have long since identified a few players as "chuckers'' but added that nothing has ever been done about it.

He stated that claims have been included in the umpires' reports and handed to the BCBC but no action has been taken.

Yesterday, Bailey denied the BCBC had received any reports, adding that the umpires association had distanced itself from Butler's comments.

"There was a complaint to the BCBC from a top official of the umpires association that Mr. Butler's comments in a newspaper article were not representive of the association,'' Bailey said in the statement.

"The allegations of any irregularities of bowlers in Barbados have not been officially reported to the BCBC and therefore these matters have not been resolved if necessary to do so.'' Added Bailey: "Mr. Butler's comments were inaccurate and irresponsible as the BCBC had not received the reports as stated, that certain bowlers were throwing the ball. "Mr. Butler's statement was bias and prejudice and severly detrimental to the named players whose cricket careers are now jeopardised and tarnished. The BCBC is concerned about these players being victimised.

"The action taken by the BCBC was taken in the best interest of the sport, especially when players have already been prejudged by an individual who is in the capacity of officiating.'' Bailey denied that the omission of the two players from the Bermuda matches against Derbyshire had anything to do with the publicity surrounding their bowling actions.

Fox was also not named in the St. George's Cup Match XI for the match on Sunday, though Brangman is expected to play for league champions Western Stars against the visitors next Tuesday.
