Butterfield in danger of missing Worlds
upcoming World Triathlon Championships in Montreal.
But their success in a recent qualifying event, which saw a number of local competitors make the grade, has been tempered with the news that the Island's top triathlete Tyler Butterfield is suffering from mononucleosis and may be ruled out of the Worlds.
Butterfield turned in an outstanding performance at the recent USA World Championship qualifier in Clermont, where he won the 16-19 age group, to easily qualify for the Bermuda team.
However, the trip to Montreal along with others that the Saltus student had planned this summer, may now be threatened as he is forced to cut back drastically on his training.
The qualifying race, organised by Bermuda Triathlon Association, saw several competitors reach the BTA's A and B times in their age groups.
Sixteen-year-old Herring, who finished the 1500 metre swim, 40K bike ride and 10K run in first place overall in 2:14.07, reached the A qualifying standard for the 16-19 age group.
Also meeting A qualifying times in their respective age groups were veteran Linda Dillon and Karen Smith.
Orchard was the first female overall, finishing in an excellent time of 2:26.57 which gave her a B qualifying time. Also reaching the B standard were former Bermuda national champion Neil de ste Croix, who was second male overall, Olivier Martin, Kim Mason and Lea Butterfield.
Rounding out those currently eligible to represent Bermuda is Kent Richardson, whose outstanding performance at the St. Anthony's Triathlon in St.
Petersburg, Florida in April gave him an A time.
The biggest surprise of the recent qualifier was the performance of three of Bermuda's up and coming junior girls competing in their first adult race over a 750 metre swim, 20K bike and 5K run. Thirteen-year-old Melissa DeSilva and 14-year-olds Ashley Robinson-Roberts and Robyn Dickinson all made the 13-15 qualifying time and join Nick Taylor and Chris Conway on the Bermuda team.
Robinson-Roberts' time was all the more remarkable as she and Brian Steinhoff and Mark Morrison took a wrong turn on the course which saw them add about a half-mile to their run.
Also meeting the qualifying standard was Matthew Herring who joins his older brother on the team. The Bermuda 13-15 team, together with other triathletes from the Tri Hedz junior triathlon club will be travelling to Manchester, England in August for the British Championships.
