Butterfield tipped for Enduro title

tomorrow when participants tackle a 375-metre swim, 10K bike and 2.5K run...and then do it all over again.

The new-style event thus involves six gruelling stages as action switches quickly between disciplines.

Tyler Butterfield will be a strong favourite for the overall individual title after dominating the triathlon scene this year. But rival Jonathan Herring, another of Bermuda's outstanding juniors, will be full of confidence, having won the National Triathlon Championships just two weeks ago.

Herring, together with Kevin Tucker and Kent Richardson, are probably the only athletes capable of providing Butterfield with a challenge.

The women's overall title should be a close-fought affair. Laurie Orchard, who took her first National Triathlon Championship title this year, and Julia Hawley, winner of the Bank of Bermuda Triathlon, will start as favourites. But if she enters, Lynn Patchett could put up a fight, having narrowly missed out on the national title.

The over-40 men's event could provide a exciting finish with Andrew Doble, Tab Froud and Granville Gibbons all expected in the line-up. Gibbons, although a weaker swimmer than the others, is both a good cyclist and runner.

A beginners' adult event over 375 metres, 10K and 2.5K will be held in conjunction with the Enduro triathlon.
