Cann, Town just too much for Cougars
It was not pretty but Dandy Town were decisive while putting paid to Devonshire Cougars' FA Cup challenge at Devonshire Rec. field yesterday.
Town established dominance early as they made it clear that they were not there simply to make a social call. Things got rolling in the seventh minute when Walter Musson picked up a failed clearance by the defence just inside the penalty area. He rushed in on goal and his shot caught Cougars 'keeper Arnold West off his line as the ball found the back of the net.
Cougars were able to shake off the setback and settled down to play some constructive soccer. But as was the case all afternoon, poor running off the ball and a lack of finishing would prove to be their demise.
One could sense that this was going to be a long afternoon for the Cougars when Town scored their second goal in the 13th minute of play. The goal developed after Lionel Cann received a pass from Paul Cann over the middle.
Cann raced in on goal and did a stutter move, which froze Cougars defender Troy Smith. Cann turned and fired in off the post from 18 yards out.
In the 28th minute, Cougars' Dwayne Bean, got into the penalty area when his defender fell down. Instead of firing from 10 yards out, he tried to beat another defender covering on the play and was stripped of the ball.
Cougars' Germaine Burt was whistled and shown the yellow card in the 29th minute of play when he deliberately handled the ball in front of referee Dennis Wainright.
Cougars seemed to lose their composure and were reduced to a lot of aimless running around and poor marking. They paid dearly in the 32nd minute when Town were awarded a penalty after Cann was pulled down in the area. Walter Musson easily scored.
Cougars' best opportunity to score in the game came in the 44th minute.
Glenville DeShields beat his man into the penalty area and laid a pass back to Burt who shot over weakly from 10 yards.
Two minutes into the second half, Cougars came out running. DeShields, the recipient of a fine pass by Donald Norford, raced in on goal and fired straight at Town 'keeper Anthony Manders. Manders did well to block the ball, which rebounded to Burt who shot well high and wide.
It became academic when Town notched their fourth goal in the 63rd minute. On a throw-in down the sideline, Musson got by his defender and swooped in on goal. He drew the defender covering on the play leaving Lionel Cann all alone as he punched the ball past the helpless 'keeper.
