Cann's scoring carries Chargers
Christian girls high school soccer team in Tennessee, helping the school to its first ever TSSAA Class A/AA state championship recently.
Cann, who only joined the school as a senior in September, scored in her team's a 3-0 victory over Memphis Ridgeway in the championship game. It was her 21st goal in 13 games for the school, including two hat-tricks.
Cann, 17, is the daughter of Kenny and Norma Cann of Somerset (the couple now reside in Tennessee). Her soccer exploits should not be too surprising as her father is a former Somerset Trojans and Bermuda international defender.
Cann's ability to put the ball in the net on a regular basis was the key to her team's success.
The Lady Chargers lost only twice during the regular season and then began post-season play with four straight, and easy, victories. Each of those four wins brought a title, District, Regional, Sectional and Sub State. The Sub State victory came over Anderson County 2-1 in sudden death overtime and carried the team to the State final.
Cann helped the team reach the final by opening the scoring seven minutes into the second half after taking a pass from Nikki Crutcher, who also set up the winning goal.
The following night the Lady Chargers were back in action for the state final.
The victory marked their finest season, though they had to wait until the 47th minute to break the deadlock.
Crutcher, also a senior, and Cann then scored in the final ten minutes of the match to seal the win. Crutcher was named tournament MVP while Cann was one of two players from her team to be voted outstanding players during their sports awards. She received a plaque as well as a medal for her performance in the All-State final.
