Carpet duty for Clay
reported for an incident that allegedly occurred during a Premier Division match at St. George's Cricket Club against Willow Cuts on August 10.
But it remains to be seen how the case would be dealt with as the St. George's captain left for school in the United States on Monday. It is understood that Smith allegedly used abusive language to umpire Ronald O'Hara after being given out lbw. A report of the incident was subsequently forwarded to the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control. Yesterday BCBC president El James refused to comment on the matter, claiming that any comment may hinder a case if it was ever going to reach the disciplinary committee.
James's contention was that public disclosure of the details of the charges against Richard Basden of Willows Cuts, facing similar charges, had in fact had a negative impact on the case which is currently before the appeals committee. As a result the policy of the board in the future is not to offer any comment about impending disciplinary cases.
Smith struck a century as a guest player while helping St. David's to retain the Eastern Counties Cup last Saturday, then saw his league club St. George's clinch the Premier Division Open Championship the next day with a comprehensive thrashing of Western Stars.
