SNOOKER SNO The final of the Gosling Trophy proved an entertaining affair recently, but the result was a predictable one with National Sports Club claiming their second title of the year.

Once again Sandys Sports Club were the unwilling victims, this coming after they could only manage a second place finish, similarly behind Nationals, in First Division league play.

Still, the latest battle was one of great intrigue, started when Kyle Thompson of Nationals downed Tony DeSilva 54-40 in the opening game, one not decided until slotting away the black ball following a missed opportunity by DeSilva.

Responding quickly to the letdown was Sandys' Roger Henderson, who disposed of Stephen Pantry 51-36 to level the match at 1-1.

Nationals' Brian Walker restored the advantage against Lawrence DeSilva, first producing a 16 point break and then simply protecting his lead and coasting to a solid 65-26 triumph that ultimately earned him player-of-the-week honours.

But Sandys refused to go quietly and squared things up yet again through Greg Falzone, who produced a stellar display of long distance potting to overcome the challenge put forth by Paul Charleton.

The stage was now set for an intriguing final and deciding contest featuring Tyler Moniz of Nationals and Sandy's Timmy Simons.

Moniz bolted to an early lead and appeared to be coasting to victory when Simons produced a sequence of top class pots to establish a seven point lead at the midway point.

However, a series of tactical shots allowed Moniz to regain the upper hand and he went on to win the game, cross-banking the pink ball, which also gave his team the title.

Tonight sees the League Cup play-offs commencing, with Sandys Sports Club I taking on Sandys Sports Club II at 7.30 p.m., while Nationals tackle Sandys Boat Club at Old Colony Club, also starting at 7.30 p.m..
