Clark tears it up in grand fashion
cycle race in the Seniors category on Sunday, pulling ahead of Dana Henry, Mike Lee and Darren Dowling in what amounted to the most dramatic finish of an exciting day of racing in all categories.
Tear completed the 45-mile course at the US Naval Annex in Sandys in one hour, 56 minutes and six seconds. A day earlier, Tear led all seniors after the six-mile time trial and 18-mile criterium. In the time trials, Tear raced the two laps in 14 minutes and 23 seconds, breaking away from Lee, who eventually finished 15 seconds behind and Jeff Payne who clocked in at 14:49.
Lee finished in second place in the criterium, where he posted a similar time as Tear, and then Kevin Topple followed 48 seconds later to lock up third place. Typical of many of the finishes, Topple managed to nip Jeff Payne by a mere half a wheel.
In Sunday's road race there were no sharp attacks during the first four laps of the three-mile circuit, making the race a much more tactical one.
Eventually the pace, which often exceeded speeds of 25 miles per hour, told on the racers. Whayman Butterfield finished four seconds behind the leaders, followed closely behind, again, by Payne.
After the two days of racing, Tear was atop the standings with 360 points followed by Lee (320), Payne (268) and Topple (212).
Donald Musson parlayed an excellent showing in Saturday's Novices and Veterans criterium to grab first place in the overall strandings after a third-place finish in Sunday's road race.
Vic Ball, who clocked in at one hour, 32 minutes and 15 seconds, won the road race on Sunday with George Sutherland crossing the finish line one minute later to sew up second place.
Musson, meanwhile, raced in just over six minutes after Ball's impressive showing, but it was his solid performance in the 171 -mile criterium a day earlier, where he ran the course in 45 minutes and one second, which enabled him to cement a first-place finish overall.
Second in the Novice standings was Gilles Marchand with 208 points. Marchand was sixth after the road race, finishing 8:49 after Ball but, like Musson, it took a strong showing in Saturday's criterium to add much-needed points to his total. Alvis Brangman was third with 165 points thanks to a second-place showing in the criterium and seventh-place finish in the road race.
Sutherland sealed a first-place finish in the veterans category with 275 points, far and away the top racer with second-place finisher Luis Muso and third-placed Richard Mason far behind.
Sutherland clocked the six-mile time trial in 15 minutes and 30 seconds and then completed the road race one minute behind eventual champion Vic Ball.
