Collieson and DeSilva live up to reputations
tennis players when they came away with a pair of titles each during the finals of the Argus Open at Tennis Stadium.
Collieson, ranked number one, waltzed past a stunned Chris Harris to take the men's singles championship 6-1, 6-1 in less than an hour.
He later teamed up with Michael Way to beat Ricky Mallory and Sam Maybury 6-3, 6-4 to take the doubles crown.
"He was just too good, too strong,'' said Harris. "He just controlled every point, preventing me from getting to the net. His forehand is a really big weapon. This prevented me from pressuring him, giving him some easy points.'' DeSilva, 16, who is set to take part in a challenger tournament in Florida next month, was made to work for both her titles.
Veteran Donna Bradshaw forced her to prove her mettle during a three hour battle before she won out 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-0.
DeSilva suffered a scare in the first set when her opponent came from 1-5 down to take five straight games. She had to call on all of her reserves in order to save the set and force a tie-break.
Bradshaw took the second set, but had nothing left in the third as the younger and better conditioned DeSilva wrapped it up inside 15 minutes.
Bradshaw said: "I wasn't out there for fun. If she was as good as they say she is, and she wanted to win, she was going to have to win every point. I didn't intend to give her anything.'' DeSilva said: "I didn't take her for granted because of her age. She was just a wily player who made me work for every point, many of which I stupidly gave away rushing my shots, trying too hard.'' DeSilva won her second title when she teamed up with Ricky Mallory to take the mixed doubles title against Mark Cordeiro and Jill Finnegan.
The match ended 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 but the day was not a lost cause for Finnegan as she won the women's doubles title with Wendy Gelhay.
The pair saw off Barbara Lambert and Laverne Stowe 6,1, 4-6, 6-3.
Earl Leader took the seniors crown with a walkover after Coleridge Place was unable to play.
Meanwhile Ashley Brooks made Island tennis history when she became the youngest player to win a senior open event -- taking the women's B title in a three hour, three set 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over Tracey Berrell.
Brooks said afterwards: "I was just in another world out there. Here I was playing in a senior singles final. "It was a big difference to playing in the youth tournaments I've played in before and I did get a bit nervous, especially in the third game when I was serving for a 3-1 lead and she saved three game points.'' At the end of the tournament, Joy Pimental, Vice President Marketing, at Argus Insurance said: "The quality of play in this our first venture into the tennis arena was of the highest calibre and it was invigorating to see so many young people taking part.''
