Colts and town in friendship stalemate
Devonhire Colts forged a replay of last night's quarter-final tie of the Friendship Trophy match with Dandy Town as 120 minutes proved not enough to separate the two sides at Devonshire Rec.
Town were prevalent early on, dominating much of the early going and having centre-half Wayne Campbell scoring to put them into the lead.
With continuous pressure applied by winger Walter Musson and Paul Cann in midfield, Town were a constant menace to the Colts defence, pinning them for long periods with well directed attacks.
But Colts displayed the resolve that has seen them take over the league leadership as they duly replied through veteran Harrison Trott.
Campbell sent his side ahead after barely six minutes when he headed home the second of two consecutive inswinging right wing corners by Musson which left Colts' goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson little chance, going in at the near post.
And a minute later defender Neil Paynter surged forward from his defensive position to place a header inches over the crossbar as Town attempted to deliver the knock-out blow to their younger opponents, who were a virtual non-entity at this point in the match.
Indeed the first 20 minutes minutes saw Town virtually camped out in the Colts half of the field, firing pot-shots at Hendrickson, who had to be on alert to cut out numerous attacks and keep his team in the game.
Colts would get their first real chance in the 21st minute...and take full advantage of it.
Craig Smith curved a freekick from the towards goal from the right side of the penalty area that Town 'keeper Ricky Tucker tipped away for a corner.
The resultant corner from the left saw Trott rise through a network of players to place a header past Tucker and secure what turned out to be the ultimate tally for Colts.
A bevy of missed chances by both sides was the trademark of the second half and extra time.
Included in this contest of ineptitude were Town's Gladwin Johnson and substitute Lionel Cann while Colts culprits went by the names of Trott and Weldon, who had numerous chances to seal victory.
This failure was magnified by the late ejection of Colts' skipper Craig Smith when he was shown the red card by referee Stuart Crockwell following a second cautionable offence.
