Colts outclass St. David's
Devonshire Colts slipped, slithered, and skidded their way to victory over St.
David's yesterday.
The rain-soaked pitch was as much the enemy as a hopelessly outclassed St.
David's team.
In the first half, Colts' attacking machine was frustrated, its wheels often spinning furiously in the mud.
But the next 45 minutes saw a shift to a much higher gear.
The away team's relentless pressure finally paid off in the 52nd and 73rd minutes.
Strikers Ellington Weldon and Quincey Aberdeen sent fans into a frenzy with two goalmouth strikes.
Both left question marks hanging over the St. David's battered defence.
But it was understandable the defence should buckle after a non-stop barrage of attacks.
Substitute Keishon Smith capped off Colts' afternoon with a superb 86th-minute header.
Smith -- who had come on for Vic Ball -- caught the ball cleanly after a beautifully lofted cross from the right by striker Aberdeen.
Goalkeeper Dale Fox had no chance as the ball flew into the back of the net.
Fox knew he would have to be on the alert right from the outset at St. David's yesterday.
Colts' pressure was as unremitting as the wind-driven rain.
Their attacking intentions were clear when in the second minute Jermel Belboda linked up with Harrison Trott.
Trott, however, struck the ball weakly along the ground to Fox.
A minute later Germaine Burt set off on a dazzling run down left flank, and floated a high cross into the centre.
Aberdeen picked up the ball, but badly miscued the shot.
In the 44th minute, Fox narrowly escaped disaster when he took too long clearing a ball passed back to him.
He was eventually robbed of the ball by Weldon, who was handed with a superb opportunity.
But Weldon spared Fox's blushes with a weak shot.
The restart saw Colts determined not to be defeated by the skid-pan conditions.
They opened their account after Aberdeen whipped the ball into the area from the right.
An unmarked Weldon showed a poacher's touch by scrambling the ball over the line.
Weldon nearly doubled his tally in the 61st minute with a 17-yard shot, which zipped just above the ground.
The ball flew inches past the right of Fox's post.
St. David's had a great -- and rare -- chance to score in the 65th minute when Shea Pitcher crossed the ball high to James Pace.
But Pace, who found himself in space, sent the header wide of Antoine Lightbourne's goal.
Colts were immediately back on the attack, and Trott was unlucky not to score when he rapped the post in the 69th minute.
The second goal, almost a carbon copy of the first, came when Aberdeen forced the ball into the net from a few feet after Belboda had whipped a cross in from the right.
It was then left for Smith to complete Colts' account.
