Cox defends Mid Ocean Crown

qualifying round after Thomas Hubner of Germany and Paul Evans of the United States tied on 73 in the junior division of the Men's Invitational Golf Tournament at Mid Ocean Club.

Regardless who emerges as the eventual winner, the pair will start the match play tournament today as two of the main contenders for Ricky Cox's title.

Two-handicapper Doug Clark, a former Bermuda amateur champion, and scratch player Gunnar Bennett are two others to watch in the junior division.

Cox, as the defending champion, was not required to play yesterday but he will see action today when he takes on Pat O'Malley in the first round of the championship flight. Cox is a one-handicapper.

Yesterday, four other players were tied on 75, two strokes behind Hubner and Evans. They were Doug Clark of North Carolina, Ray Daue of Maryland and Edward Ryan and Robert Mullin of Massachusetts.

Kirk Kitson was the top finisher amongst the Bermuda residents, shooting a 77.

Bermudian Howard DeSilva led the qualifiers in the senior division after his round of 72, which was the day's best score. DeSilva won that division by two strokes over American David Donahue while John Wheeler, also of Massachusetts, was a further two strokes behind.

Dick Stimets, a scratch player, is the defending champion in the seniors.
