Cup Match clubs to have a say in leadership battle
this weekend but Cup Match clubs St. George's and Somerset are hoping to have a say in the Open Division leadership tomorrow when they take on first and second placed Willow Cuts and Western Stars.
Cuts opened their lead at the top to six points last weekend as their comfortable win over Cleveland while Western Stars stayed in contention with their easy win over Police in the day's top match.
Cuts make the long trek to Wellington Oval to meet the former league champions. St. George's, who slowed up Bailey's Bay's push for the top last weekend when they held out for a draw at Sea Breeze Oval, have their sights set on upsetting Willow Cuts and thus picking up their most important win of the season.
St. George's are currently in the bottom half of the tables in 10th place with 16 points separating them from Police and Southampton immediately above them.
Captain Dexter Basden has been by far Willow Cuts' best batsman this season, having already scored 472 runs at an average of 52.44. His brother Richard, a late starter to the season because of injury, is always likely to produce something with the bat and with Cup Match looming he'll be anxious for a good performance.
Rodney Fubler, with 31 wickets, is the leading Willow Cuts bowler so far, while his new ball partner Vance Gilbert has 16 wickets.
Somerset host second-placed Western Stars as Andre Manders goes up against his former team. Somerset, seventh, have the opportunity to move another two places up the standings but they won't have an easy time against a Western Stars team which is still unbeaten in the league.
Third placed Bailey's Bay, the other unbeaten team, travel to White Hill Field to meet second-from-bottom Somerset Bridge who, despite picking up a number of new players, have still not improved their fortunes. Bay have the services of Noel Gibbons for this weekend and next and should at least hold on to their present position with a win over Bridge.
Champions Devonshire Rec, level on points with Bay, take on fifth-placed Nationals in one of the most interesting match-ups of the day, though Nationals are still not back to full strength with spinner Bruce Perinchief still out of action.
Last weekend, Rec were without captain Anthony Amory and bowler Winston Trott but still managed to beat Hamilton Parish, though not without a couple of early scares.
Schedule: Cleveland v Ham. Parish (Sea Breeze Oval); Warwick v Southampton (Southampton Oval); Somerset v Western Stars (Somerset); Police v Flatts (Police Field); Som. Bridge v Bailey's Bay (White Hill Field); St. George's v Willow Cuts (Wellington Oval); YMSC v St. David's (St. John's Field); Devonshire v Nationals (Devonshire Rec).
DEXTER BASDEN -- will be looking to keep Willow Cuts on top of the Open Division tomorrow when they travel to Wellington Oval to meet St. George's.
