Cuts face tough Counties opener
results, kicks off its three match series today at White Hill Field where champions Willow Cuts take on Warwick in a 60-overs match.
And, if Warwick can play up to their potential, there is a good chance of another new champion being crowned.
They have named a solid all-round team with Stevie Lightbourne of Police coming in as a guest player and youngster Quinton Sherlock Jr. making his debut, following his father, the former Southampton Rangers wicketkeeper, into the competition.
Sherlock Jr. is a medium pace bowler of promise who claimed six wickets against St. George's last weekend. He and Daniel Caines, both members of the Bermuda youth team which travel to Holland next week for the International Youth Tournament, will be key members of the Warwick bowling attack, along with El James, Alan Wilkinson and Ritchie Foggo.
Two years ago Southampton Rangers went through the series unbeaten, but the re-emergence of Warwick as a team to be respected must make Willow Cuts cautious as they open the defence of their title.
The cup usually changes hands at least once during the series and Warwick will be keen to get their hands on it for the first time in several years.
Warwick have been beaten in the first round of each of the last three years, by nine wickets to Southampton Rangers in 1992, and by five wickets to Rangers and Somerset Bridge in '93 and '94.
Now it will be interesting to see if Warwick can bounce back from their crushing defeat at the hands of St. George's last weekend, hammered for 275 after sending the East Enders in to bat and then being dismissed for just 87.
However, things could be different today in the limited overs (60) game with El James, who sat out last weekend's match, lending his experience to the batting along with nephews Stevie and Trent Lightbourne, Ritchie Foggo and Johnny Nusum.
This is the strongest Warwick's batting has looked in a long time and with their bowling having both variety and experience, it could be an interesting day for the Willow Cuts batsmen, led by captain Dexter Basden, Richard Basden, Jermaine Warner, Andre Hendrickson and Vivian Simons.
In Premier League action tomorrow the top matches will be at Police Field and Somerset where third-placed Police take on Cleveland and Willow Cuts host St.
David's.
League leaders Western Stars are away to Flatts at Devonshire Rec., while defending champions Bailey's Bay will be aiming to bounce back from their shock loss to Nationals last weekend when they take on PHC at home.
Nationals, who moved up into second place, should hang onto that spot with a win at home against Somerset while Devonshire Rec. are expected to improve their lowly position by beating Social Club at St. John's Field.
In other matches Southampton Rangers take on Warwick in an interesting derby encounter at Southampton Oval while St. George's are at home to Somerset Bridge at Wellington Oval.
