Dandy Town 1 Devonshire Colts 0

Dandy Town continued their victory streak at the expense of Devonshire Colts as they ousted them from the Friendship Trophy last night at PHC.

Finalists last year, Lorenzo Symonds' young crew stood firm for 100 minutes, but were undone by a fortuitous extra-time strike by Town defenceman Wayne Campbell.

A corner-kick by forward Michael Wells brought about the goal as the ball bobbled around the area before Campbell pounced, forcing the ball past goalkeeper Antoine Lightbourne.

While the strike served as a reward for the sizable crowd on hand, it could not exorcise the demons of what was generally a poorly contested game.

The early moments proved most forgettable as the frigid weather served to unsettle both sides.

Town warmed to the task in the 14th minute when Jeff (Smudger) Butterfield came close to opening Town's account from a free-kick deep in enemy territory.

Butterfield's shot appeared earmarked for the back of the net only to have a defender stick out a boot at the last moment and deflect for a corner.

Later, Town's best player and leading scorer, Carlos Smith showed great perseverance as he miraculously rode three tackles on his way into Colts' penalty area and unleashed a shot that sailed agonisingly over the bar.

Not to be outdone, Colts stormed back with a piece of artistry themselves as veteran midfielder Harrison Trott "turned-on-a-dime' to get in a right foot volley which went directly into the waiting arms of 'keeper Cymande Davis.

Another excellent save marked the completion of the half as Lightbourne displayed great reflex action to keep out another effort by Butterfield after he deflected a cross goal-ward.

Little changed in the second period of regulation with play fairly balanced and neither outfit showing any inclination to score.

Smith, as usual, was a troublesome force with his great acceleration on the ball, but received little help from his supporting cast.

For Colts left-back Leonard Hypolite and Mark Ray in midfield showed their class, with steady, if not spectacular, performances, but like Smith were "left on an island'' by team-mates not in tune with the flow of the match.

Quincy Aberdeen missed the perfect opportunity to send Colts into the lead after 58 minutes, missing a sitter from barely six yards.

And 13 minutes later Vic Ball had a pair of volleys blocked by the stout Town defensive wall consisting of Troy Durham, Campbell, Wylie Rudo and Lloyd Christopher.

As precious seconds ticked away each team began pushing increasing numbers forward in search of the goal that would likely decide the contest, but with no success.

Lightbourne ensured an extra period in the 80th minute, saving off the head of Smith after a left-wing corner by Wells.

Weary and having little left to offer, play disintegrated further during extra-time and many chose to desert the cool confines in preference to warm households.

However, they would miss the ultimate decider by Campbell which, if nothing else, prevented another gruesome `go-round'.

Town coach Mark Trott, nevertheless, saw a silver lining to the victory, saying: "The team has a saying `no guts, no glory' and to much extent that was the story tonight... myself, I'm proud of the way they performed.'' Som. Eagles 1, Ham. Parish 2 Somerset Eagles were removed from Second Division Shield contention as two moves by Corey Hill served to clip the wings and ground the low flying west end bunch.

After spurring his team into the lead after only 18 minutes Hill turned provider in laying on a crucial pass to Chris Caisey, resulting in an easy tap in by the latter.

Dion Minors scored for Eagles.

WAYNE CAMPBELL -- Scored winning goal.
